Endorse the recommendations in the 2013 BC Child Poverty Report Card

We, the undersigned, call on the Governments of British Columbia and Canada to immediately move to implement the 16 recommendations detailed in the 2013 BC Child Poverty Report Card published by First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition.

We believe that it is unacceptable that one out of every five children in BC is living in poverty; the highest child poverty rate in Canada.

It’s time for BC’s provincial government and our federal Members of Parliament to look at the evidence of what’s happening to children and families in this province. It’s time to look “upstream” at the causes of child and family poverty and to act on the preventative recommendations in this report.

In 2013, governments cannot claim to be ignorant of the abundant evidence of the harm done to children’s health and development by growing up in poverty, nor of the huge additional costs in health care, education, the justice system and lost productivity we are already paying by keeping poverty rates so high.

Child poverty is not inevitable, if the governments of British Columbia and Canada were to implement the 16 recommendations in this report, a dramatic reduction in child and family poverty in BC is possible.

Together we can make a difference in the lives of BC’s children and youth!
